What’s REALLY in My Sensory Mum Bag? (Chaos & Calm Essentials)

The Reality of Sensory Mum Life

I used to think I’d be the mum with the neat little channel handbag — the kind with just a purse, phone, and maybe a spare snack? Fast forward to sensory parenting, and now? My bag is basically a portable survival kit. It’s where chaos meets calm, all zipped into one overstuffed, well-loved kids’ backpack.

Because when you’re parenting a sensory seeker, you never know what you’re going to need — but it’s guaranteed to be a lot.

Here’s What’s Actually in My Sensory Mum Bag (Plus a Car Boot Full of Backups):

Forget handbags. I’ve fully accepted that my bits and bobs belong in the kids’ zip pouch.

  • Spare clothes & pants (because anything can happen)

  • Nappies (Isaac will only poo in one — no judgement, eye roll)

  • Snacks (aka bribes disguised as food and not always healthy I will admit)

  • Toys (today? A car. Last week? A Henry Hoover because Isaac refused to leave without it 😅)

  • Socks (because keeping socks on feet? Not in this house)

  • Juice bottle (spill-proof = essential)

  • Isaac’s phone (aka my old one — portable YouTube lifesaver)

  • iPad (especially if we’re visiting others — my sanity depends on it)

  • My phone (no purse anymore, I’m a fully digital — minimalist mum)

  • Keys (usually buried under everything else)

  • Lip balm (a little self-care amongst the chaos)

  • Portable phone charger (because everything I own is dying)

  • Chewing Gum

  • Random receipts and coupons

  • Socks for ME (soft play survival gear 😂)

  • Receipts, coupons, crumbs (because, of course)

  • Mini dry shampoo & mini perfume (because mum-life chaos still deserves a fresh vibe)

  • Wine (just kidding… or am I?!) 🍷😉

Honestly, if someone snatched this bag thinking they were getting valuables? They’d open it, find the chaos, and throw it back.

The Calm Essentials (AKA My Sanity Savers)

When the world starts to wobble and meltdowns loom, these are the calm tools I always have on hand:

  • Henry Hoover teddy - It's actually a screen cleaner but he doesn't know that! I must have bought about 20 of these things! (quick distractions!) 👉 Click here for henry hoover soft toy

Why This Chaos Keeps Me Sane

Being prepared as a sensory mum isn’t optional — it’s survival. This bag of chaos and calm helps me roll with whatever the day throws at us (and trust me, it throws a LOT).

These tools don’t just prevent meltdowns — they give me the confidence to leave the house without worrying about the “what ifs.” And yes, I keep extra spares stashed in the car boot — because one bag is never enough!

So if your bag looks like mine? You’re not alone. And if your child has a random obsession with hoovers? Also not alone. 😅

What’s the weirdest thing in your bag right now? Drop it in the comments — I’d LOVE to know I’m not the only one carrying around mystery crumbs and a hoover.
